At different stages of exploration of the North American continent it was inhabited by representatives of different peoples, in the 1st century A.D. even the Vikings came here and founded their settlement, but it did not take root. After Columbus "discovered America," the period of European colonization of this land began, the flow of settlers from all over the Old World, the Spaniards, the Portuguese, the British and the French, and representatives of the Scandinavian countries rushed here.

After conquering the lands of the displacement from their territory of the indigenous population of North America - the Indians, who at the beginning of the European expansion did not even own firearms and were forced under threat of total destruction to cede their lands, the settlers became the masters of the vast areas of the New World, with huge natural potential.

The Native Americans got their name from Christopher Columbus. The famous navigator called all the natives of America with one word: Indians. In fact, there were many tribes living in the modern United States, speaking more than 300 languages. Today, there are no more than a hundred dialects surviving. This article will talk about the Native Americans who lived and still live in the territory of the modern United States of America.

It is not possible to determine the number of Native Americans before Columbus, because at the initial stage, no one was engaged in counting the Indians. In connection with this, the range of figures is huge, from 8 million to 75 million people. Now, according to the US census, the number of Indians is just over 5 million people, which equals 1.6% of the country's population.

Today, Native Americans have virtually lost their language, using it only at home, within the family. Most Native Americans have completely adopted the way of white people. However, in spite of this, Native Americans love their land, honor the traditions of their ancestors, passing them down from generation to generation.
