Aboriginal Diabetes
In partnership with Health Canada, the Labrador Metis Nation takes diabetes very seriously. Together both organizations have been able to:
To raise awareness of the seriousness of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors;
To prevent type 2 diabetes by promoting healthy lifestyle choices;
To offer culturally-appropriate programs and services that promote/encourage healthy eating and physical activity;
To promote nutritional benefits of eating traditional foods; and
To encourage Metis participation and ownership by seeking input and providing consistent feedback through various media, while working toward sustainability.
The Learning for Life Preventing Diabetes Project of the Labrador Metis Nation has been in existence since December 2001. With the increasing obesity rates and rise of type 2 diabetes, a lot of work continues to be required. We
