Mr. Montague bluntly stated the reality: Which is that the development of Labrador is never for the good of Labradorian people. It is where the population lies; it is the culture of Labradorian's to be indigenous people. The Newfoundland Government's purpose is to determine how to extract resources from Labrador. They are not developing the Churchill River for the good of the people of Labrador, but rather a business deal for the Avalon Peninsula.

Mr. Marcoccnio stated that the drive to develop the Churchill River, is none other than a man greedy for power in St. John's. He also stated tha this is none other than colonial exploitation of Labrador. Mr. Marcoccino feels that the Goverment's econcomic perspective on this project is non existent.

President Chris Montague presenting Youth Pastor Howard Feltham, Calvary Temple E.D.G.E. Youth Ministries, with a $1,000 cheque. (larger version)
May 2008

E.D.G.E. Youth Ministries, Charlottetown Calvary Temple, Labrador planned a trip to enlighten, challenge and shape Charlottetown youth. Many students from the coast of Labrador find themselves lacking opportunities to broaden their world views and expand their knowledge of other people groups, primarily due to the high cost of travel from coastal communities to the rest of Canada. The Youth Ministry planned a trip to Toronto, Ottawa, where Charlottetown youth served with the Center for Student Mission (CSM) in May 2008.

Students involved served homeless people in soup kitchens, second hand clothes stores, food banks as well as helped to clean the community that surrounded them. They were given the opportunity to eat ethnic food and experience cultural practices unique to the various nationalities. They were also given an opportunity to both observe and practice servant hood, which has had a profound effect on their hearts and minds.

Labrador Metis Nation President, Chris Montague, strongly believing that health is not only physical, but mental and spiritual, contributed $1,000.00 from his personal Medical Expense Fund to the group. "The youth are given an opportunity to learn the value of assisting others. They have provided much needed health care to the homeless people of Toronto, and have returned with an experience which will mentally and spiritually benefit them well into the future."

6th Annual World Archeaological Congress Conference in Dublin, Ireland
June 27 - July 6, 2008

Memorial University of Newfoundland provided funding for President Montague, Dr. Lisa Rankin, and LMN Consultant Greg Mitchell to attended the 6th Annual World Archeaological Congress Conference (WAC-6 Conference) in Dublin, Ireland.

The three participants gave a joint presentation to the conference concerning the importance of archaeological work being conducted on the South Coast of Labrador.

Until Dr. Rankin had begun her work there was a view that Thule Inuit did not inhabit the South Coast of Labrador before the arrival of Europeans. This view undermined the validity of an LMN Land Claim.

The position used against Inuit occupation contradicted all written documents. It claimed there was no Thule Inuit occupation because there was no archaeological evidence. However, there was no archaeological evidence because there was no exploration or digs for Thule sites. The absence of archaeology was not neutral, it was negative.

Mr. Montague stated that the LMN will assist and encourage archaeology in their homeland, but they have no desire to interfere. The activity goes far beyond our immediate concerns, as the work is uncovering an important part of the story of humankind.

He said "I want this to be an independent academic study. We are prepared to accept whatever evidence is uncovered. The truth, whatever it is, must be respected."

President Montague attends Various Meetings in St.John's NL, November 26th-30th
On November 28th LMN President, Chris Montague met with representatives of the office of the Federal Interlocator (OFI) in St. John's NL to discuss issues concerning the LMN and the Provincial Government. The Provincial Government is especially concerned about the progress the LMN land claim and it's implications for the future. The Province is very Skeptical on our self identification as "Inuit Descendants." They were told by OFI that the LMN is indeed making progress toward a "third party review" of a land claim and that the Federal Government does consider our members as Aboriginal beyond any doubt. Such conclusions are already supported by the Supreme Court of NL and upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada. Eventually it is hoped that the Government of this province will acknowledge what is so evident in our courts and all across Canada.

While in St.John's the President also met with Yvonne Jones to discuss immediate issues regarding the LMN. This collabrative approach with the official leader of the opposition can only strengthen the organization. As MHA of our coastal region many concerns were expressed and discussed in thish very productive meeting.

During this time, the President also met with Lisa Rankin, an archaeology professor at Memorial Universtiy of Newfoundland. Ms Rankin has done extensive archaeological work on the South Coast of Labrador. Her fine academic work has written a new chapter in the history of Southern Labrador. Mr. Montague said he had a most informative meeting and that a true historic picture of Southern Labrador can only help our cause.

Mr. Montague had conversations with many other people during his visit. They included Todd Russell MP, Kevin Alyward, Jerome Kennedy, Micheal Ignatieff and Todd Burlingame who is an official with the Lower Chruchill Hydro Development Project. The visit to our Provincial capital was most productive.
