SE`TO SKATOWIN (empowering ourselves and others) National Youth Health Careers Conference - Winnipeg
Dear fellow Labradorians,

In November 2007, I became involved with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples as the Labrador Métis Nation Youth Representative for the National Youth Council. At the Annual General Meeting in Halifax, I was nominated and elected as one of three people on the National Steering Committee. Since this time, I had the opportunity to attend the Labrador Métis Nation Annual General Assembly in Charlottetown, Labrador. Most recently, I was involved in the planning and delivery of the SE`TO SKATOWIN (empowering ourselves and others) National Youth Health Careers Conference in Winnipeg.

I would like to take this opportunity to share my excitement with you. Last week, 14 young people from Labrador travelled to Winnipeg for SE`TO SKATOWIN National Youth Health Careers Conference. It was a fun filled week where we all got to hear success stories of fellow Aboriginal youth, adults, and Elders from all across the country. I am especially honoured that Mr. Joe Goudie attended this conference on behalf of the Labrador Métis Nation in what he calls his "first public role as an Elder". He spoke very eloquently and I am proud to have had him in our presence for the conference. I am also very proud to see Labrador so well represented at the National Level. In the past few years, I have attended many National and Regional conferences and I have never seen such a large group of well accomplished and ambitious young people.

The conference focused on health careers (from medicine to nursing to research to mathematics and everything in between). Participants were given a solid foundation to help them in choosing a career that is right for them. Presenters shared their personal experiences with us by speaking about the challenges and obstacles that they have faced to get to where they are today. Some youth have mentioned that this conference was empowering, inspirational, and well worth every moment.

Great friendships were made and the youth gained valuable insight into the growing field of health careers. I am proud to say that so many Labrador Métis Youth were present at this conference and am inspired by each of them. Seeing young people with so much drive and ambition was truly rewarding and I hope the goals and dreams of all our youth will be realized.

I encourage you to join the Facebook group, SE'TO SKATOWIN 2008 Alumni: CAP Youth Health Careers Conference so you can see how the youth are responding to this great initiative!

Once again, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all those who attended the conference – you have contributed to making SE'TO SKATOWIN a success! I would also like to say thank you to all the schools and employers who recognized the importance of this conference and allowed youth to attend. This experience will stay with our youth as they continue to move forward in their journey. Your support and encouragement is not gone unnoticed and for that we are truly thankful. Remember to stay strong and stand proud!

I represent the Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Circle NL (ASRCNL). We are looking for Métis involvement in the programs that we offer to Aboriginal people from all across the province. We are funded to provide Athlete and Coaching Development camps and clinics, help with grassroots development of sport and help with inter provincial travel to competitions for athletes and also capacity building for coaches and officials.

We also have an information session coming up presented by the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC)of Canada. If you or anyone else within your government are interested in attending please contact by me by March 14,2008.
